Our History
The roots of the Domain of Killien go
back to 1277 in France with the original Domaine de Quillien, a
forest estate in Brittany. It had come by dowry to a family who would
establish through the ages a tradition of managing and nurturing
their lands.
In 1981, a descendant of that family—Count Edouard de Moustier—and
his wife discovered another land of enchanting forests in Ontario’s
Haliburton Highlands. They acquired a property of 5,000 acres, including
a former private hunting and fishing camp. Soon after, sons Dante
and Jean-Edouard came to Canada; the former Haliburton Lodge was
completely renovated, in
keeping with its original character, and renamed the Domain of Killien.
A local physician, charismatic figure, and keen outdoorsman, Dr.
Louis Carroll had built the lodge in 1927. He particularly enjoyed the
tranquility
of a remote cabin that still exists today on the estate’s Delphis
Lake.
Today, innkeeper Jean-Edouard de Marenches invites you to discover
a truly unique country inn and experience some wonderful contradictions:
- Fine French cuisine against a backdrop of forest and lakes.
- Privacy and tranquility, only two and a half hours north of Toronto.
- Quiet comfort and European refinement in a
quintessential Canadian pine and log setting.
- Twelve accommodations on a 5,000-acre estate.
